The AI hub will be developed in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Airtel, combining cloud infrastructure, connectivity, and renewable energy capabilities. Announced on October 14, 2025, the Visakhapatnam AI hub is designed to be a cornerstone of Google’s global cloud and AI expansion. It will include a gigawatt-scale data center campus, advanced AI research facilities, and a state-of-the-art submarine cable landing station that enhances India’s east-coast connectivity to international networks.

A Google spokesperson said during the launch event, “India has the talent, scale, and ambition to lead the next wave of AI innovation. This investment is not just about technology; it is about building opportunities that last generations.”

The Andhra Pradesh government played a crucial role in securing this project. Under a special incentive package, Google will receive free land allocation, utility waivers, and tax breaks worth ₹22,000 crore, making it one of the most ambitious public-private collaborations in India’s digital sector.

Why Visakhapatnam?

Visakhapatnam, often known as Vizag, was chosen over other Indian metros like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Officials familiar with the deal say the availability of coastal infrastructure, low energy costs, and strong government support made Andhra Pradesh the most attractive destination.

Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy welcomed the deal, stating, “This is not just an investment; it is a declaration that Andhra Pradesh is ready to become the AI capital of India.”

Industry experts point out that the port city’s strategic position on the eastern coast allows direct undersea cable connectivity, reducing latency for global AI workloads and cloud services. This infrastructure could make India a key node in Google’s worldwide AI network, connecting markets in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

What the project includes

According to reports, the Visakhapatnam campus will host:

  1. AI research and development centers focused on applied machine learning and generative AI.
  2. High-capacity data centers powered by renewable energy sources.
  3. Submarine cable landing facilities to improve international data traffic flow.
  4. Training and innovation labs for students and startups in collaboration with Indian universities.

Airtel will provide backbone connectivity and 5G integration, while AdaniConneX will manage power, cooling, and data infrastructure. Google aims to ensure that at least 50 percent of the project’s operational energy comes from renewable sources by 2030.

Economic and social impact

The Andhra Pradesh government expects the project to transform the local economy. Beyond the 190,000 new jobs, the state anticipates a surge in real estate development, infrastructure upgrades, and ancillary industries such as construction, logistics, and IT support.

Economist Dr. K. Srinivas Rao commented, “The multiplier effect of this investment will be huge. Every dollar Google spends will generate at least five dollars in related economic activity for Andhra Pradesh.”

Meanwhile, small businesses and educational institutions in the region are expected to benefit from digital training and cloud partnerships. Google’s India head also hinted that the company would soon launch AI learning programs for young engineers and students from Andhra Pradesh to make them “AI-ready” for future roles.

Rising regional rivalry

However, the announcement has stirred political debate in southern India. Karnataka officials have questioned the financial feasibility of offering such heavy incentives, arguing that it could trigger an unhealthy competition among states.

A Bengaluru-based technology policy analyst said, “While Andhra has won this round, states must think long term. Free land and massive tax waivers are good headlines today, but sustainability matters in the next decade.”

The Andhra government has dismissed the criticism, saying the project will pay for itself through job creation, foreign exchange inflow, and indirect tax revenues.

The global picture

Google’s move reflects a broader global trend of AI infrastructure decentralization. After concentrating its data centers in the U.S. and Europe, the tech giant is now betting big on emerging markets like India, where demand for cloud computing, AI models, and data storage is exploding.

The company is also focusing on making AI accessible for public projects, agriculture, and small businesses. Analysts believe the Visakhapatnam AI hub could serve as the Asian command center for Google’s AI-driven products, including Gemini, Vertex AI, and Cloud TPU services.

Future outlook

Construction of the Visakhapatnam facility is expected to begin in early 2026, with phased operations starting by 2028. Google has committed to adhering to environmental standards, using seawater cooling systems, and investing in renewable energy plants within the state.
